The Polartec Apex Awards are an opportunity to recognize uses of Polartec fabrics that embody innovation and thoughtful design. Every year, there are a few that stand out.
Below are the eleven Apex Awards winners for 2017. Find out why their use of Polartec’s Science of Fabric stood out from the rest.
This women’s outdoor jacket is designed to keep people going without the need to add or shed layers. It features a hybrid construction, offering more protection than your average wind jacket. The outer layer is made with durable Pertex® Quantum® fabric, while the front is insulated with Polartec® Alpha® for lightweight, breathable warmth in low temperatures. A reflective logo stands out on the pocket, and the jacket packs into itself for easy storage, with two zip pockets for secure your belongings.
The Nyara Wrap from Arc’teryx is a flattering, soft fleece wrap that works great as a casual layering piece, able to be worn open or closed. It’s made from a new version of Polartec® Thermal Pro® fabric which has the appearance of a premium sweatshirt. The new knit is created from a specially engineered combination of polyester for lightweight, quick-drying warmth and durability, and natural Tencel Lyocell for a more casual aesthetic, hand feel and drape.
The Combat Shirt is a hybrid mid-layer developed for use during intense activity, training and expeditions. Created using a combination of Polartec® Power Grid® fleece and CORDURA® 4-way stretch materials on the back and abrasion-prone areas, it features large mesh expander chest pockets to keep necessary belongings stored safely. Polartec® Power Grid® is the original grid fleece, relied upon to maximize breathability, warmth, wicking action and compressibility, while minimizing weight and dry-times.
The Burton Minturn Hooded Full-Zip Fleece is a midweight fleece layer built with riding in mind. Cut from Polartec® Classic fleece with a shearling finish, it features low-profile side and underarm panels for a more streamlined fit under a snowboard jacket, and it’s substantial enough to be worn on its own. Additional features include a helmet-compatible hood, zippered handwarmer pockets, and a droptail hem.
Citera has used Polartec® NeoShell® for a year-round, practical M65-style jacket, expanding the possibilities of urban apparel. Polartec® NeoShell®is known to be the most breathable waterproof fabric on the market, with stretch and comfort throughout the widest range of conditions. Citera found the fabric to be not just highly suitable for activity in inclement weather, but also a desirable material for more casual usage with its soft touch and aesthetic that lends itself to modern, urban apparel designs.
The Fox Attack Pro Jersey employs a hybrid construction of Polartec® Delta® cooling fabric in the body, and Cordura for increased abrasion resistance on the sleeves. Polartec Delta is a special fiber and yarn construction engineered to enhance the body’s natural evaporative cooling response. The garment’s “Rider Attack Position” fit ensures a precise fit on the bike.
The Mountain Hardwear Atherm Hooded Jacket is an extraordinary combination of weather-resistance and temperature regulating breathable technology, made with a hybrid construction of three different Polartec technologies, to decrease the need to add or shed layers. Designed to be the ultimate in breathable insulation for high exertion mountain activities, the jacket employs a combination of Polartec® Alpha® Direct and Polartec® High Loft™ insulations in the body, and Polartec® Alpha® insulation in the sleeves. These Polartec technologies provide temperature regulation, and a stretch fabric on the exterior provides weather resistance.
The lofoten Power Shield Pro Alpha Jacket is a revolutionary jacket providing air permeable weather protection with insulation and high breathability. The outer fabric is made of a laminated Polartec® Power Shield® Pro woven nylon with a Polartec® Alpha® insulation lining. Polartec® Power Shield® Pro is highly water resistant (practically waterproof) while maintaining critical breathability. This combination makes the jacket work as an individual freeride jacket but also as a great addition underneath or outside a shell jacket in rough conditions. Designed for chasing pow, it features new and improved stretch cuffs, a hood with single handed back adjustments, as well as a goggle wipe.
Oiselle calls it HoverFit, and it’s an appropriate name for the technology used in this collection of tops. They’re made from Polartec® Delta® cooling fabric, a special fiber and yarn construction engineered to enhance the body’s natural evaporative cooling process. The fabric is engineered to provide lightweight, highly breathable comfort that retains some perspiration for evaporative cooling in hot conditions, without becoming soggy, clingy, or non-breathable.
Made from Polartec® Delta® cooling fabric, and designed for use with body armor for military, law enforcement, and other tactical uses, the FRS-DELTA is a field training shirt designed for hot conditions. It also features shoulder pads, a sleeve lining to protect arms from falls, and a lining on the back to protect against body armor and backpacks. Polartec® Delta® cooling fabric was selected for its ability to manage moisture in hot conditions while increasing airflow and reducing friction against the skin during movement.
The Hawkins Jacket is made from a new knit version of Polartec® NeoShell®, the most breathable waterproof fabric on the market, which provides increased stretch and freedom of movement without compromising durability, offering a new level of comfort in a waterproof fabric. Taylor Stitch has used Polartec NeoShell to make a style resembling the classic silhouette of a 60/40 jacket for comfort in a wide range of conditions and settings.
